Commuting a long way to work is like having a long distance relationship with yourself. It’s two identities in two different worlds, 40km apart.
City Laura wears corporate clothing. She means to go running at lunch-time but often sits at her desk. City Laura dances salsa and weaves a slow, sexy zouk. In the morning, she sips her latte and watches women topple around in their fashionable shoes on cobblestone laneways. City Laura is Brisbane Laura. She still wears sneakers to and from work.
Country Laura grows herbs and bakes her own bread. She wears glasses and gumboots and occasionally, an apron. Country Laura brings her groceries home in a cardboard box and makes her meals from scratch. She watches the parrots swoop between towering Mountain Ash and smiles as they hop along the ground with plantain flowers in their claws.
It’s technology that makes this long distance relationship work. I am grateful for both worlds because they’re each fun in their own way. One day I will probably have to choose, but not yet. Technology is still on my side.
